How to Control Legionnaires Disease in UK Water Systems

Controlling legionella bacteria in UK water systems to be a successful campaign must be a concerted effort both for the local government and the community. The bacterium Legionella pneumophila may cause severe pneumonia and in extreme cases, death, if not treated properly and promptly.

Awareness of controlling legionella bacteria in UK water systems is important in getting successful results. The legionella bacteria is widespread in natural water environment and can enter man made UK water systems easily.

In eliminating or preventing risks, minimising the generation of water droplets and airborne particles are important in controlling legionella bacteria in UK water systems.

The legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires Disease. Its symptoms are flu-like, such as chills, feverishness and high temperature; cough; headache; pneumonia (very occasionally); and diarrhoea and signs of mental confusion. Reporting at once can help the authorities take the necessary measures in controlling legionella bacteria in UK water systems.

The Health and Safety Commissions Approved Code of Practice, L8 "Legionnaires' disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems" forms the basis of dealing with the problem.

HSC's guide outlines the necessary steps to be taken by employers who maintain hot and cold water services and/or wet cooling systems including cooling towers and evaporative condensers. Legionnaires' Disease from its definition to preventing and controlling risk of legionella bacteria to managing the risk are all included in the guide. Employers are required to report incidence of Legionnaires' disease in the workplace so that proper measures can be taken accordingly.
